This book was life changing for me. I had been diagnosed with diverticulities ( a doctor's wayof saying they don't know what is wrong with you), I knew what was wrong and it was that I was eating in a harmful manner, just like so many others in our society. After following the guidelines n Clissold's book I lost a great deal of weight and have had no digestive problems as long as I eat in a balanced way. As a minister, scholar, father and friend I have recommended this book to others.

Amen! I actually vacillate (sp?!) between providing nutrition data for my Chinese home cooking recipes and leaving them out - really, Chinese home cooking follows Pollan's advice to "Eat [real] food. Not too much. Mostly plants." Thanks for the book suggestion - will definitely check Clissold out!

I do like the balance of Chinese food. I've never counted calories when eating, but maybe I should start. Unfortunately, in the last year and a half, I've gained a bit of weight because of my mother-in-law's cooking...it's really good, but she just makes far too much for one meal (it's about double what I used to eat in the US).

Balance is an essential to good eating but you don't have to find that balance, just follow the lore of whatever traditional eating you choose and the balance has been found for you. There is nothing experimental about it as it will have been tried, tested and proved over hundreds of generations. If it didn't work then those generations would never have existed!

I like the Chinese approach to eating in many ways.. LIke this book says: it's all about finding a balanced diet, rather than cutting things out of your diet...And it's all about mixing different flavour and in the end: to simply sit down and enjoy your meal! I have never gone on any sort of diet and I have always enjoyed food. I eat more than most of my friends (and my dad -and that's an achivement) but I try not to make it such a big deal, and f course, I don't eat deep fried or crisps too often... only once in a while. Instead of thinking about that I should eat less I just make sure to exercise on a daily basis (doesn't have to be 10km of running every day -a 30 min bike ride does it for lazy days) and that's it. I don't understand why people find it so complicated. U don't have to be super heathly to stay fit, u just have to use your common sense, do some exercise and not treat yourself to candy/ice cream every single day...
